About Douglas College

Douglas College was officially opened on Nov. 19, 1970, by then-Premier W.A.C. Bennett. Douglas was one of seven new community colleges opening in B.C. at the time, in response to a critical shortage of higher education institutions. In the first year, 1600 students studied at 20 different locations around the Lower Mainland and sometimes only had a five-minute window to get from one city to another for classes. In the College’s opening years, tuition fees for one semester totaled $100, or $24 for a course (at the time, the minimum wage was only $1.25 per hour).
By 1980, Douglas was the second largest college in British Columbia, serving eight school districts and one-third of the province’s population. In 1981, the decision was made to divide the College into two separate institutions. The Surrey location became Kwantlen College – today, known as Kwantlen Polytechnic University – and the multiple locations on the north side of the river amalgamated into one campus in New Westminster, with the current Royal Ave location officially opening in 1983.
As registration numbers grew, Douglas College was soon bursting at the seams. The Coquitlam Campus opened in 1996 and was later expanded with the addition of the Health Sciences Centre in 2008. The New Westminster Campus expanded its facilities in 2018, taking over four floors at the nearby Anvil Office Tower.
In 2005, Douglas College was given degree-granting status, and its first graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing walked the stage in 2007. Since then, Douglas has expanded its degree programs, adding its 13th degree in 2018.
